Warrenville will begin final engineering in fall 2026 on a multi-use path along Route 59. The project, the city's top bikeway priority since 2016, covers the stretch between Batavia Road and Continental/Meadow Avenue.

The Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) will cover 80% of the cost for final engineering, construction and construction engineering, according to the city's project page. Preliminary engineering design is complete, and the Illinois Department of Transportation approved a Project Development Report in 2025.

When built, the project will add paths and sidewalks on both sides of Route 59 along that segment. It also includes ADA-accessible ramps, replacement of existing sidewalk, new storm sewers and the relocation of signs and utility poles. A small portion of the segment will require easement acquisition, the city said on its project page.

Why this stretch

Warrenville City Council adopted Addendum No. 1 to the city's Bikeway Implementation Plan in January 2016. The original plan dates to November 2010. The addendum ranked the Batavia Road-to-Continental/Meadow segment as the highest priority because of vehicle speed limits, traffic volume, accidents and accessibility gaps.

The finished path will give residents a safe, ADA-accessible route to commercial areas and connect to existing pedestrian routes along Continental and Batavia Road, according to the city.

Route 59 corridor plan

The path project sits inside a larger planning effort for the Route 59 corridor. Warrenville launched Forward 59, a year-long corridor plan, in July 2026, according to the city's Forward 59 page. That process will evaluate land use, economic development and infrastructure improvements along the corridor.

Residents can contact Community Planner Jack Maszka at [email protected] to join the email distribution list for upcoming meetings. A community input survey and interactive mapping tool are open until Nov. 6. Public review of the draft corridor plan is expected in summer 2027.

The city held a public meeting on the path project on Oct. 12, 2022. No additional public meetings for the path project have been announced.
