An antique gun discharged inside Wheaton Yard on East Front Street on the night of Tuesday, Oct. 27. The gun, worn as part of a Halloween costume, fell to the floor and went off, Patch reported.
Wheaton Yard said no serious injuries occurred, according to Patch.
The City of Wheaton alerted residents about a large police presence in the 100 block of East Front Street that evening. Patch reported the alert went out around 9:45 p.m. The city's notice said Wheaton Police were conducting an investigation and that there was no threat to the public. It added that there could be a continued police presence while the investigation proceeded and asked for residents' patience.
Wheaton Yard, which comprises Front Street Kitchen and The Backyard, later shared an announcement on Front Street Kitchen's social media pages, according to Patch. The restaurant described the firearm as an antique that had been brought as part of a Halloween costume.
The restaurant said the Wheaton Police Department responded promptly and investigated the situation with help from Wheaton Yard's security cameras, according to Patch.
"We are thankful that no one was hurt and for our police department's rapid response," Wheaton Yard wrote, according to Patch. "Firearms are strictly prohibited at Wheaton Yard, and signage is posted accordingly at the entrance of the property."
The Wheaton Police Department has not publicly confirmed the nature of the Oct. 27 investigation or released details about the incident. Patch reported that police did not immediately respond to its request for more information early the following morning.
