Firefighters contained a small fire at an unoccupied home under construction in unincorporated West Chicago early Thursday, Sept. 17, with no injuries reported.

The West Chicago Fire Protection District was dispatched around 5:55 a.m. to the 3N400 block of Shagbark Drive after callers reported flames near a residence, according to the district. Crews arriving on scene found a small fire at the peak of the first-floor roofline and brought it under control quickly.

No one was living in the home at the time. No civilians or firefighters were injured.

The district said weather conditions suggest a lightning strike is possible but added that it cannot confirm the cause. The exact origin remains undetermined.

While the fire itself caused limited structural damage, the home sustained water damage from both the storm and firefighting operations, along with heat and smoke damage. The district turned the property over to the homeowner and declared the home uninhabitable.

Residents who witness a fire or emergency should call 911.
