Warrenville residents looking to keep their gardens vibrant past midsummer can pick up tips from University of Illinois Extension experts at a free program on Thursday, Aug. 20.
The "Late Summer and Fall Garden Colors" session runs from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Warrenville Public Library, 28W751 Stafford Place. It's open to adults 18 and older, and registration is recommended.
The program is free.
Presenters from U of I Extension's DuPage County Master Gardeners will cover perennials, ornamental grasses and the fall color of trees and shrubs that can extend a garden's visual interest into September and beyond, according to the city's event listing. The talk is part of the Master Gardeners' speaker bureau, which sends trained volunteers to community groups across DuPage, Kane and Kendall counties.
Those volunteers put in serious hours. In 2023, the most recent year with published data, Master Gardeners in the tri-county area answered more than 700 help requests and logged 15,727 volunteer hours through local service projects, according to U of I Extension.
Residents who want year-round gardening help can also reach the DuPage County Master Gardener Help Desk, open March through October on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The desk is at 1100 E. Warrenville Road, Suite 170, Naperville, and can be reached at 630-955-1123.
