Warrenville's park board will vote Thursday, July 16, on nearly $397,000 in capital spending for a new playground and a synthetic turf system, the two largest items on a meeting agenda heavy with park improvements.

The Warrenville Park District Board of Commissioners will consider a $231,284 playground purchase from Cunningham Recreation and a $165,584 contract for a Perfect Turf PerfectPlay synthetic turf system at Sesquicentennial Park, according to the board's posted agenda for its 5 p.m. meeting at the Recreation Center, 3S260 Warren Ave.

Barb Thornbury, who signed the public notice as board president, posted the agenda on Friday, July 10.

Playground follows public input

The district held two "Pick Your Playground at Sesqui" sessions on Monday, June 8, and Tuesday, June 9, at Sesquicentennial Park, inviting residents to weigh in on design options. The official agenda lists the playground purchase without naming a specific park, but the public input sessions were advertised as choosing a playground for Sesquicentennial Park. The agenda does not detail which design was selected or the playground's features.

Synthetic turf adds to ongoing Sesqui upgrades

The synthetic turf installation continues a broader transformation at Sesquicentennial Park. In November 2025, the board approved a $29,561 change order for excavation and removal of sand from former volleyball courts to make way for new pickleball courts. In January 2026, the Warrenville City Council approved a stormwater management easement at the park after the pickleball court addition triggered DuPage County stormwater rules. The park district agreed to install a rain garden to meet the requirement.

Cerny Park update also on the agenda

The board will hear an update on Cerny Park's OSLAD Phase II project, which received a $600,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in December 2024. Phase II includes a splash pad, bocce ball court, family game area, ball field fencing renovation, and dugout shelter. Construction was scheduled to begin after Friday, July 4, with the splash pad projected to open in 2027.

The city and park district share costs under an intergovernmental agreement in which the park district reimburses the city for the local share, up to $600,000. Hitchcock Design Group was engaged for final design at $107,800.
