West Chicago Community High School students will race through 30 original plays in a single hour this week. WeGo Drama opens its fall season Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m. in the school's Commons.

The catch: they won't be on their usual stage. The school's auditorium is mid-renovation, so the cast will transform the Commons, the building's cafeteria, into a temporary theater.

The production, titled "30/60: 30 Plays in 60 Minutes," is a partnership with Chicago's Neo-Futurist Theatre, the collective behind the long-running late-night show The Infinite Wrench. That format traces back to "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind," which became the longest-running show in Chicago theater history.

Every piece is student-written.

Director Mark Begovich and technical director Chris Jensen guided workshops, but the final product belongs to the performers, Begovich told the Wildcat Chronicle. He called the production "one of those dream productions" and said the Neo-Futurist style emphasizes honesty, chance, risk and transformation drawn from performers' real experiences.

The venue swap fits that philosophy. With the auditorium still under renovation, Begovich said the group sees the Commons as another chance to practice what the show preaches.

The auditorium renovation carries a budget of just under $1.5 million, the Wildcat Chronicle reported in March. The project was timed to mark the 100th anniversary of the original school building. Upgrades include new seating, a shift from red decor to Wildcat blue, new carpeting and accessibility improvements.

Performances are at 7 p.m. in the West Chicago Community High School Commons. Ticket and admission details can be found here.
