Peter Coolidge will be the next DuPage County sheriff, making him the first Democrat to win the office after a long line of Republicans.
Coolidge, a retired DuPage County sheriff's deputy, defeated Republican Sean Noonan with nearly two-thirds of the vote on Nov. 3, according to Patch. Unofficial totals showed Coolidge with 195,657 votes to Noonan's 131,289, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. Multiple outlets, including the New York Times and Daily Herald, declared Coolidge the winner.
The sheriff's race was one of three marquee DuPage County contests that all broke for Democrats on a night when more than 52 percent of the county's registered voters cast ballots, according to the DuPage County Clerk's Office. Of 634,871 registered voters, 334,647 had voted as of election night.
Both candidates ran to replace retiring two-term Sheriff James Mendrick, a Republican who left the post to pursue an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.
Coolidge retired from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office in February 2024 after 28 years of service, according to candidate records. He worked in all three bureaus: Corrections, Law Enforcement and Courthouse Administration. In his last years, he worked in courthouse security.
Noonan, an officer with Oakbrook Terrace and a former county board member, has a long law enforcement career, Patch reported.
Coolidge won despite facing scrutiny during the campaign. A man sued DuPage County accusing Coolidge and another deputy of using excessive force against him, according to Patch. The county denied the allegations. Separately, in 2018, a woman complained to Winfield police that Coolidge had been repeatedly sending her messages, according to a police report. A Winfield officer eventually told Coolidge in person to stop contacting the woman, and Coolidge agreed, police said.
Garcia wins clerk race
Paula Deacon Garcia won the DuPage County Clerk's race with more than 62 percent of the vote, according to unofficial totals. Garcia, a DuPage County Board member representing District 2 since 2020, defeated her Republican opponent.
Garcia had earlier defeated incumbent County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek.
Conroy holds board chair seat
DuPage County Board Chair Deb Conroy retained her seat, topping Republican Gary Grasso with more than 62 percent of the vote in unofficial totals. Conroy is the first woman to chair the DuPage County Board and the first Democrat to hold the position in over 75 years.
The results cap a strong election night for DuPage County Democrats. Election results remain unofficial until certified by election authorities.
