Wheaton drivers who use I-355 to reach Butterfield Road or Roosevelt Road face overnight ramp closures that will stretch through the fall.
The Illinois Tollway is closing ramps at multiple I-355 interchanges overnight for pavement and structural repairs, Shaw Local reported Oct. 31. Butterfield Road, also known as Illinois Route 53, and Roosevelt Road, also known as Illinois Route 38, are among the affected interchanges. Both roads are primary east-west routes through Wheaton.
The closures without detours run between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. at ramps serving Butterfield Road, Roosevelt Road, Ogden Avenue, North Avenue, Army Trail Road, Maple Avenue, Boughton Road, 75th Street and 63rd Street.
A separate set of closures with posted detours runs between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on ramps connecting I-355 to I-88 and I-55. During those closures, detour signs will route traffic to westbound I-88 through the Route 53 interchange and back onto eastbound I-88, according to the Tollway's news release.
Electronic message signs and construction signage will alert drivers to closures and detour routes, the Tollway said.
What's being repaired
The work covers pavement and bridge repairs on I-355 between I-80 and Army Trail Road in Will, Cook and DuPage counties. Additional work includes camera installation, lighting repairs, sign installation and pavement marking, according to the Tollway's project page.
The project is part of the Tollway's seven-year, $2 billion "Bridging the Future" capital plan.
How long it lasts
The two sources available offer different timelines. Shaw Local, citing the Tollway, reported Oct. 31 that repair work is scheduled to continue into 2027. The Tollway's own project page, last updated Oct. 28, states the work is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2026.
All road work and scheduling depends on weather, the Tollway said.
What drivers should know
Construction zone speed limits are in effect at all times, even when workers are not present. The Tollway also reminded drivers of the state's Move Over Law, which requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing any stopped vehicle displaying hazard lights. Fines can reach $10,000, according to the Tollway.
Specific nightly closure dates are not listed in the Tollway's announcement. Drivers can check the Daily Construction Alert on the Tollway's website for daily updates on which ramps will be closed.
