A Buffalo Grove man is the second person charged in the armed carjacking on East Willow Avenue in Wheaton on Friday, July 24, and will remain jailed pending trial.

Daveon Givens, 24, of the 1200 block of Johnson Drive in Buffalo Grove, faces three felony counts: aggravated vehicular hijacking, a Class X felony; aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a Class 4 felony; and aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 4 felony, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

DuPage County Circuit Court Judge Joshua Dieden granted prosecutors' motion to deny Givens pre-trial release.

How the arrest happened

Wheaton detectives had been conducting surveillance on Givens' residence. On Saturday, July 25, they spotted him outside the home. Givens allegedly fled on foot. Officers caught him quickly, the State's Attorney's Office said.

The arrest came one day after the carjacking itself. Around 12:45 a.m. on July 24, a masked individual knocked on a victim's car window in the 1000 block of East Willow Avenue, displayed a black handgun, and ordered the victim out of his vehicle moments after he had pulled into his own driveway, according to Wheaton police. A second masked person then drove off in the victim's black 2020 Acura MDX while the gunman fled in a gray Nissan Sentra.

Both vehicles sped east on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, reaching approximately 100 mph in a 35 mph zone. Officers deployed spike strips, causing the Nissan to crash. As we reported July 27, Andrew Strong, 25, of Chicago, was apprehended that night with help from an Illinois State Police plane and DuPage County Sheriff's deputies. A loaded Springfield handgun was recovered from the Nissan's passenger seat.

Strong faces the same three felony charges as Givens. Judge Louis Aranda denied Strong pre-trial release at his first court appearance on Monday, July 27.

Third suspect still at large

Prosecutors described Givens as "the second of three men accused" in the carjacking. A third suspect has not been publicly charged.

The stolen Acura MDX has since been recovered, the State's Attorney's Office said.

Wheaton Police Chief P.J. Youker said Givens "learned that such brazen crimes will be met with the full resources of the Wheaton Police Department and all of our law enforcement partners."

Both Givens and Strong are scheduled to appear in court Monday, August 24, before Judge Daniel Guerin.
