Warrenville's $1.2 million Cerny Park splash pad project is under construction and nearing a key deadline, and the park district board is set to hear an update at its Sept. 17 meeting.
The Warrenville Park District Board of Commissioners meets at 5 p.m. at the Recreation Center, 3S260 Warren Ave. The meeting agenda, signed by Board President Barb Thornbury, also lists a VFW lease discussion and two closed sessions.
Cerny Park Phase II includes a new splash pad, shelter relocation, dugout shelters, bag toss and horseshoe courts, fencing, and landscaping. Construction began July 6 after Hitchcock Design Group led a pre-construction meeting with contractor Claus Brothers and city engineers, according to June 18 board minutes.
The project's estimated cost dropped from roughly $1.3 million to about $1.2 million as contingencies were refined. A $600,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources covers roughly half. The substantial completion deadline is Oct. 30, with final completion set for Nov. 27.
The splash pad opens in 2027.
Residents chose a nature-themed design over a sports-themed option by a two-to-one margin during a public vote Dec. 1–4, 2025, according to November 2025 board minutes. Executive Director Tim Reinbold has led updates on the project at recent board meetings.
The agenda lists a VFW lease agreement under new business. No prior board minutes available through June 2026 mention the lease, and the agenda does not identify the VFW post, the property involved, or proposed terms.
A revised agenda posted Sept. 15 added a second closed session covering the employment or dismissal of independent contractors in a park or recreational setting, under 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1). The original agenda already included a closed session on potential land acquisition under 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(5).
The board has discussed land acquisition in closed session before. In June 2025, commissioners considered several sites, including a parcel near a water tower close to Amazon, the Woodland parcel, a BP parcel, and Fauci Farm, according to June 2025 minutes. The board entered a land acquisition closed session again in August 2025 and took no public action afterward.
The consent agenda includes $269,227.51 in expenditures through Aug. 31. The city's director of community and economic development is scheduled to present Warrenville development updates.
The board's next parks tour is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. Residents can attend the Sept. 17 meeting or contact the park district at 630-393-7279 for accommodations.
