Drivers on Warrenville's neighborhood streets will see a new uniform speed limit after the City Council voted Monday, July 6, to set 25 mph as the standard on all residential roads under city jurisdiction.
The same ordinance raises the posted limit on a 0.4-mile stretch of Williams Road north of Batavia Road from 30 mph to 35 mph. The rest of Williams Road and adjacent Batavia Road are already posted at 35 mph. The city has not announced when new signs will go up.
The changes followed a citywide traffic study and a public survey that drew more than 200 responses, according to a civic alert posted by the city on Tuesday, July 8.
Why the changes
The city's traffic consultant reviewed speeds, volumes, crash history, pedestrian and bicycle activity, and on-street parking across Warrenville. The key finding: lower posted speed limits alone do not necessarily result in slower driving.
On the Williams Road segment, the consultant found no roadway characteristics that justify a lower limit than adjacent sections. Traffic data showed drivers were not slowing down for the 30 mph zone, making the lower posting ineffective.
The study also determined Warrenville has a low crash rate overall, with most collisions occurring on higher-speed roads and at intersections rather than on residential streets.
Resident input
More than 200 residents participated in the survey before the council considered the consultant's recommendations. Survey results and public comments were shared with the council as part of its review. The traffic study memo, dated Monday, April 27, was presented to the council on Monday, May 4. Both the memo and resident survey comments are posted on the city's website at warrenville.il.us.
