Wheaton Academy's boys golf team won the Class 2A state championship Saturday, Oct. 10, at Weibring Golf Club in Normal, finishing 39 strokes ahead of runner-up Quincy Notre Dame.

The Warriors posted a two-day team score of 16-under-par 552 on the par-71 course. The Daily Herald reported the 39-stroke margin set a state record for the Class 2A tournament.

Senior Owen Coniaris, committed to Auburn, claimed the individual title at 9-under 133. He shot a 6-under 65 in Saturday's final round and birdied both the 17th and 18th holes to clinch it. Teammate Ben Patel finished one stroke back at 8-under 134 after a 5-under 66 on Saturday.

"The team win was the absolute goal and what I had my mind set on," Coniaris told the Daily Herald on Saturday. He added that winning the individual title alongside the team championship made the birdie on 18 even sweeter.

Coniaris and Ben Patel had shared the individual lead after Round 1, each opening with a 3-under 68. The team posted 286 in the first round to carry a six-shot cushion into Saturday.

Luke Patel shot the lowest individual round of the day, a 7-under 64, to finish fourth at 4-under 138. Torsten Karlson and Clayton Barnett each posted 150 to tie for 19th, and Nick Ratini tied for 32nd at 154. All six Warriors placed in the top 32.

The team entered Saturday six shots ahead of Quincy Notre Dame, then shot 18-under par as a group to stretch the margin from six strokes to 39. Coach Brian Kelly said the Saturday score matched a school record the team set earlier in the summer at the same course.

"We actually kind of struggled after the first day," Kelly told the Daily Herald. "But we knew what we could do."

The state title caps a postseason run in which Wheaton Academy dominated at every level. The Warriors won the Sandwich Regional at Sycamore Golf Club by 30 strokes, with Ben Patel and Coniaris each shooting 65. They then took the sectional at Kishwaukee Country Club by 41, according to Suburban Life. Kelly's squad finished third at state last year.

The Class 2A state championship is the final event of the IHSA boys golf season.
