Wheaton's two football programs hit the road Friday, Nov. 6, for Class 6A second-round playoff games, each facing a top-three seed with a quarterfinal berth on the line.

No. 7 Wheaton North (7-3) travels to No. 2 Geneva (9-1) at 6:30 p.m. No. 6 Wheaton Warrenville South (7-3) kicks off at No. 3 Riverside-Brookfield (9-1) at 7:15 p.m.

Both matchups were set after dominant first-round performances, according to Shaw Local's second-round preview.

Wheaton North at Geneva: a DuKane rematch

The Falcons already know what Geneva's offense looks like up close. The Vikings beat Wheaton North 42-14 in Week 8, holding running back Mac Murray to 37 yards and matching the Falcons' season-low point total.

Since that loss, Wheaton North has won two straight. The Falcons blanked Rolling Meadows 35-0 in the first round Oct. 31. Sophomore quarterback Grant Neibch threw two touchdown passes and Murray rushed for two scores.

The Falcons started the season 5-0 before dropping three consecutive games. Establishing Murray's ground game will be critical to controlling the clock against Geneva's high-powered attack.

Geneva quarterback Ben Peterson, an Eastern Michigan commit, has thrown for more than 2,900 yards and 38 touchdowns this season. The Vikings have topped 40 points in eight of their 10 games. Peterson's top target, Bennett Konkey, is an Illinois commit who recently earned an offer from Ohio State. Konkey caught five passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns in Geneva's 49-30 first-round win over Carmel on Oct. 31, as the Chicago Tribune reported.

Geneva, ranked No. 1 in the final Class 6A statewide poll, has won eight straight since a 44-42 Week 2 loss to Oswego. Receiver Luke Ignoffo, running back Nelson Wendell and tight end Lincoln Mercado round out the offensive threats.

The winner advances to play the winner of No. 6 Fenwick (7-3) at No. 3 Hononegah (9-1).

WW South at Riverside-Brookfield: Tigers carry momentum

The Tigers rolled into the second round with a 38-7 dismantling of Joliet Catholic on Oct. 30. Quarterback AJ Rogers threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns, connecting twice with Steven Harvey and once each with Jacob Bellows and Trent Simpson. Linebacker Clark Jensen led the defense with a game-high eight tackles, and the unit shut out Joliet Catholic until the final two minutes. Blake Ittersagen added a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Rogers has thrown for 2,570 yards and 22 touchdowns on the season. Ittersagen, one of five Tigers receivers with more than 20 catches, has 49 receptions for 739 yards and eight touchdowns. Harvey has caught seven touchdown passes.

Riverside-Brookfield presents a different challenge. The Bulldogs snapped an eight-game playoff losing streak by beating Thornwood 56-28 in the first round, their first postseason win since 2015. Dual-threat quarterback Braeden Novak has thrown for 1,755 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 762 yards and 12 touchdowns. R-B has scored at least 38 points in seven of 10 games.

The Bulldogs have won nine straight since a season-opening loss to Sandburg, but Shaw Local noted they likely have not faced a team the caliber of WW South since that Week 1 defeat.

In coverage published in late October, WW South coach Sean Norris said, "We're used to playing good teams and in competitive tough situations, even our playoff games the last few years."

The winner advances to play the winner of No. 7 Pekin (7-3) at No. 2 Normal Community West (9-1).
