A 43-year-old Chicago man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for selling fentanyl-laced drugs at locations across DuPage and Cook counties, following an undercover operation by a narcotics task force that includes Warrenville and West Chicago police.

Jason R. Spinks of Chicago's Lawndale neighborhood pleaded guilty in DuPage County Circuit Court to one count of unlawful sale or delivery of a controlled substance containing fentanyl and was sentenced Tuesday, July 21, according to the Illinois Attorney General's Office.

The case grew out of an undercover operation by the DuPage Metropolitan Enforcement Group, known as DuMEG. Starting in August 2025, an undercover DuMEG agent contacted Spinks by text message about purchasing narcotics, the attorney general's office said. Over the following weeks, Spinks sold the agent fentanyl, heroin, heroin mixed with fentanyl, and crack cocaine at locations in both counties.

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, whose office prosecuted the case, said in a statement that "fentanyl-laced drugs have devastated far too many Illinois families and communities across our state." He said he would continue using his authority to hold distributors accountable.

Raoul's Statewide Grand Jury Bureau handled the prosecution because the sales spanned multiple counties, which under Illinois law gives the attorney general's office jurisdiction rather than a single county prosecutor.

The task force

DuMEG is a multi-jurisdictional policing task force that has operated in DuPage County since 1985. Its roughly 28 member agencies include the Warrenville Police Department, the West Chicago Police Department, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office, Illinois State Police, and Homeland Security Investigations, according to the group's intergovernmental agreement.

The task force focuses on drug distribution as well as gun and human trafficking. It has partnered with the attorney general's office on prior DuPage County fentanyl cases, including a 2021 drug-induced homicide investigation in Carol Stream.
