Drivers and shoppers who use College Avenue in Wheaton will face parking restrictions and possible delays starting Tuesday, July 22, as city crews patch asphalt along the corridor.

The work runs Tuesday, July 22, through Friday, July 25, between President Street and the city's eastern boundary with Glen Ellyn. No street parking will be allowed in the work zone from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The road will stay open to through traffic, but the city warned drivers to expect temporary slowdowns and suggested choosing an alternate route. All businesses along College Avenue will remain accessible to customers during the work, according to a city alert published Saturday, July 19.

The stretch of College Avenue affected sits near the College Avenue Metra station and includes retail storefronts and offices. The city's notice emphasized that customer access will not be cut off during the project.

Separate from West Street closure

The College Avenue patching is one of at least two road projects hitting Wheaton the same week. A section of West Street between Wesley Street and Seminary Avenue is scheduled to close entirely to through traffic the week of Monday, July 21, for a sanitary sewer main replacement expected to last two to three weeks. That project, unlike the College Avenue work, involves a full road closure rather than a parking restriction.

Longer-term planning also underway

The city issued a separate request for proposals earlier in 2026 (Bid 26-89) seeking firms to conduct a Conceptual Streetscape Study of College Avenue between President Street and Hill Avenue. That study focuses on pedestrian comfort, on-street parking configuration, and the character of the block nearest the Metra station. It is a planning exercise and does not include construction.
