Wheaton will honor the 2,977 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a remembrance ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Memorial Park bandshell.

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. at 225 N. Karlskoga Ave. Mayor Phil Suess will open the event with a welcome address. Members of the Wheaton Police Department and Wheaton Fire Department will participate in an honor guard ceremony, and local musicians will perform patriotic songs. The ceremony is free.

This year's observance marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks, which also killed 343 members of the New York City Fire Department. The Wheaton ceremony pays tribute to those who died in the wars that followed, along with local military personnel, police officers and firefighters.

The event is an annual tradition at Memorial Park. In 2024, the ceremony was held at the same location with a 10 a.m. start time. This year's start has shifted to 10:30 a.m., according to Patch.

Neighboring Warrenville has also held an annual Sept. 11 ceremony in past years at the Warrenville Fire Department, 35472 Batavia Road. That event has featured a flag raising by combined fire and police honor guard, a rifle salute, bell-ringing ceremony, taps and wreath laying. Details for Warrenville's 2026 observance have not been confirmed.
