Wheaton's free Movie Night in the Park has a new date: Friday, September 11, at dusk at Seven Gables Park.
The Wheaton Park District and Wheaton Police Department will screen "Zootopia 2," the Disney animated sequel, at the park at 1750 S. Naperville Rd. First Trust is sponsoring the event.
Admission is free.
The original screening was set for Thursday, July 16, but the City of Wheaton's calendar lists it as cancelled. That evening, wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota blanketed the Chicago area with record-breaking hazardous air. Cook County's PM2.5 index exceeded 900 on a scale that tops out at 500, according to the Chicago Tribune, and outdoor events across the region were shut down. The Sun-Times reported that movies in the parks, concerts, beaches, and all 50 Chicago outdoor pools closed that day.
The Wheaton Park District updated its event listing on Wednesday, July 29, with the new September 11 date.
Movie Night in the Park is an annual collaboration between the Park District's Recreation Department and the Wheaton Police Department, led by Chief of Police P.J. Youker. The event gives officers a chance to connect with families in a relaxed outdoor setting, and it draws neighbors to Seven Gables Park each summer for a free film under the stars.
No rain date or weather-contingency plan has been announced for the September screening.
