Two hundred dog breeds will compete for Best in Show when the Great American Dog Show returns to Cantigny Park on Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6.

The two-day event, produced by the International Kennel Club of Chicago, runs 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days at 1S151 Winfield Road in Wheaton. It marks the show's fourth year, continuing a tradition the IKC built over 120 years of organized dog competition in the Chicago area.

Dachshund races, hosted by West Burb Wieners, kick off at 1:30 p.m. each day. Owners can register their dachshunds or dachshund mixes at no extra cost beyond admission. Registration is open, according to the show's website.

Beyond the breed rings, the schedule includes AKC performance demonstrations in agility, scent work, obedience, herding and trick dog; a Greet the Breeds showcase; and a Competitive Pee Wee Show for children ages 5 to 9 who want to try their hand as junior handlers.

Kids have their own zone with face painting, bounce houses, a stuffed animal obstacle course and experts teaching pet care basics, according to Choose Chicago's event listing.

Dog owners can enter the Bring Your Own Dog Fun Run or walk the Healthy Dog Walk, a self-guided trail around Cantigny Park that benefits the Anti-Cruelty Society, a Chicago-based nonprofit. The walk costs $25 and finishers receive a certificate and commemorative medal. Dogs must be leashed. They are not permitted under the show tent during judging.

Cooling pools are set up on the grounds for overheated pups.

Food Truck Row offers tacos, ice cream, coffee and shaved ice, and vendors sell pet treats, custom collars and personalized gifts.

Tickets and parking

One-day admission is $22 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under, and $18 for seniors and veterans. Tickets are available at greatamericandogshow.com. Cantigny's weekend parking fee is $10 per car; parking is free for Cantigny members, Honor Club members and ticketed-event attendees.

The Great American Dog Show also holds a winter edition. The next winter show is scheduled for Jan. 8-10, 2027, at the Tinley Park Convention Center.
