Wheaton residents can register to vote, update their registration or request a mail-in ballot at a free event Saturday, Sept. 19, at Hope Presbyterian Church.
The League of Women Voters of Wheaton will staff a voter registration table from 9:45 to 11 a.m. at the church, 1771 Weisbrook Rd., during a presentation on elections and voting. The event is open to the public.
League volunteers can help attendees with three tasks: registering to vote for the first time, updating a current registration after a move or name change, and applying for a vote-by-mail ballot ahead of the Nov. 3 General Election.
Attendees should bring two physical forms of identification. One must show a current name and address. The second must show either a current name or current address.
The Sept. 19 stop is part of a broader voter-engagement push by the nonpartisan League ahead of the fall election. Maury Goodman, president of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton, said in an Aug. 31 announcement for a separate candidate forum that the League's pre-election work is "a vital opportunity for voters to be informed and make their voices heard."
The League is also holding a voter registration event Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barn Owl Garden Center, 1N583 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream.
Several key Illinois deadlines fall between the registration events and Election Day. Mail voter registration must be postmarked by Oct. 6, according to Ballotpedia. Online voter registration closes Oct. 18. The deadline to request a mail-in ballot is Oct. 29. Early voting begins Sept. 24. Voters who miss those windows can still register in person on Election Day, Nov. 3, according to the ACLU of Illinois.
